Pools in the Forest

The Forest of Circeo, also known as the "Selva di Circe," from 1977 is included in the program "MAB" (Man and Biosphere - UNESCO) and has been declared a "Reserve of Biosphere" for its rich and extremely varied ecosystem. With its 3,300 ha is the largest and best preserved natural plain forest in Italy. The forest of the Circeo is the testimony of the "Selva di Terracina" which originally occupied 11,000 ha, a tangled forest that after the drainage of the Agro Pontino in the thirties, gave way to farmland. Features are "Piscine" (pools), areas which are formed by the accumulation of rainwater. Some of these areas have become natural reserves: "Piscina delle Bagnature" and "Piscina della Gattuccia".
